Church on the Hill, United Church of Christ in Lenox, Massachusetts Welcomes You
Announcing our New Interim Pastor
Upcoming Services for Holy Week
“Let’s do Holy Week Together”
All are welcome to join us for any and all services during this week of wonder, introspection, and preparation as we walk with Jesus through his arrival in Jerusalem, the last Supper and his death and resurrection on the cross culminating in the celebration of Easter. In order to experience the joy of Easter, we need to experience all the emotions of fear and sadness that the disciples felt. So Let’s do Holy Week Together.
Sunday, March 29, 10:30 AM Church Sanctuary, 169 Main Street, Lenox
Procession of the Palms, everyone receives a palm. Hear the story of Jesus arrival in Jerusalem.
Thursday, April 2, 7:00 PM Church Sanctuary
Maundy Thursday, Tenebrae Service
Traditional Maundy Thursday service with open Communion for all
Maundy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper with Jesus and the Apostles. The word Tenebrae is from Latin meaning shadows or darkness. We enact this service with seven readings and seven candles plus the Christ candle. As each reader finishes his/her portion of the story, a candle is extinguished. After the last reading, all candles except the Christ candle (symbolizing eternal hope) is left lit, leaving the church in virtual darkness. Then the alter is stripped and everything is taken out of the Sanctuary. Finally, everyone leaves in silence. Those who attend this service say it is the most moving service one of their favorites of the year. It helps to prepare them for the joy and exultation of Easter.
Friday, April 3, 2:00 PM Steps of Church on the Hill and parking lot
Procession of the Cross
Join us for this ecumenical service in which we gather to process from Church on the Hill down through the town center ending at Trinity Episcopal Church. Two people carry the huge wooden cross while all others follow. We stop at various locations, including St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, on the way to read passages and pray. It is a moving and emotion-filled time. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes. You can leave your car either at the top of the hill in the Church on the Hill parking lot or at the bottom of the hill in the St. Ann’s parking lot.
Sunday, April 5, 10:30 AM Sanctuary, Church on the Hill, 169 Main Street, Lenox
Traditional All Church Photograph Immediately Following Service. Everyone gathers in front of the church for the picture.
